Life skills can sometimes be over emphasized. No one ever asks an atypical person if they are ready for life. Or says to an atypical person that they can't ove out of the house because they don't know how to do laundry.
We believe Mike will learn life skills while he's living his life.
It's always been more important to us (Mike's parents) that Mike be included as an equal. Mike will learn social skills by being included and be placed in valued roles. Mike will learn "life skills" as life proceeds, just like everyone else.
With that said... here are some items we are working on.
1) Cooking: We help Mike prepare a meal twice a week.
2) We’re teaching Mike recipes that he can do on his own. This avoids high heat issues.
3) Mike is responsible for his own laundry.
4) Mike makes and keeps his own schedule.
The list goes on.
